O No, Computer

I just noticed today’s date. Pretty cool. I hope you all get to write it out at some point. After all, this only happens once a year. For the first 12 years of a millennium. Then all your chances are gone.

Today I’m writing from my new computer. A 14″ iBook. I’m just in the process of setting it up now, but so far, I’m very happy with it.

I’ve been planning on getting a new computer for a while. Especially once I saw Tiger was coming out. My old laptop, the very first version of the G4 titanium, was over six years old and didn’t have any of the good stuff in it like a large hard drive or an Airport card or a CD/DVD burner.

Oh yeah, and there was that full glass of wine I spilled on it last week.

Yes. That’s right. And the computer was plugged in and running when I did it. After saying every swear word I know, rapid-fire; I unplugged it; took it apart as much as I could (at which point I could actually turn it upside down and pour wine out of it); and wiped everything down. I let it dry overnight, but it refused to start up again. Also it smelled like an electrical fire when I plugged it in.

It’s dead and gone. I killed it. Which puts this in my winner’s circle of boneheaded acts. Possibly with the gold medal. I’ll have to think about that. It’s especially frustrating because, in the past six years, I’ve slipped up and set an open container of liquid next to my laptop maybe three times.

My family seems to think I did this subconsciously, to justify getting a brand new computer. Perhaps I did. Still I wish my subconscious would run things by me once in a while, instead of just doing whatever it wants all the time. I had some things I really wish I had backed up on my Powerbook. Now they’re lost forever.

Man, my subconscious is such a jerk.
